The Problem: The necessity in synchronization of files occurs,
when some document sets are used on several computers one or
several peoples. As examples working with one set of the
documents at desktop and portable computers, at office and at
home, group work of many employers with one document set.
Thus, there are the following problems: If the amount of
documents in the set is large enough and has complex directory
structure, they actualization is turned into the complex task.
The information exchange between different computers can occur
not only through digital network but also through external
media, such as floppy disks. In the last case, the state of the
files on the remote computer is not accessible during
synchronization process. For a period of synchronization
(typically, a day), as a rule, only a few of files from a set
has changed. The optimal synchronization tool should use this
circumstance and do not transfer the superfluous data.
At the group work, some persons can make changes in one file.
This collisions must be necessary detected, to prevent the loss
of data. File deletion problem. When some file was deleted, the
problem will occur. One computer has this file, other has not.
How to recognize, what happens: file creation on the one
computer or file deletion on another? Most tools, such as
archivators, just consider that this is file creation. This
makes deleted file looks like immortal: it will appear again and
again. The most recent file is not necessarily is actual.
Commonly, the synchronization program compares the dates of
files. The most recent file is considered actual. This is always
true only if files are incrementally edited. If some file, such
as image, is copied from other source, it date can be older.
Also, if you want return the previous version of file, it will
be problem. The correct synchronization tool must detect most
recent change in the files, not most recent file. Some systems
have different precision of file date representation. Therefore,
Windows 95/98 always rounds the time of file to 2 seconds. If
you synchronize files between Windows 95/98 and other system,
such as NT, and time of file has odd number of seconds, it will
be changed during the file copying. When you will compare for
next time, the files will looks like different again.
The offered synchronization tool provides the following
functions: Network or removable media can be used for the data
transfer. Different network protocols (LAN, FTP) and different
types of external media are supported. Data
compression/decompression automatically occurs during data
transfer. When external media is used, multiple-volume data sets
are also supported. All members of the synchronization process
are peers, without using the dedicated server or some "main"
file set. Only really changed files are transferred through
network or removable media. This let to use standard floppies in
the case when total size of the document set is some hundreds of
megabytes. The structure of folders and position of files can be
different on the different computers and can be changed
independently. File deletion processed correctly. Program
detects document collisions and warns user about it. The usage
of synchronization tool not requires the complex education and
such simple, as usage of archivator. Program has intuitive,
visual interface using proprietary file selection technology,
developed by LACOS. Program uses CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Code)
instead of simple checking file date. The format of data is
supplying the possibility of exchange between different
platforms (Windows, Unix, DOS) with usage of appropriate version
of program.
